The principle is the same. A rotor in the flow spins and makes electricity. The machine looks different because water is different from air, just as fish are different from birds.

Concentrated power where ocean meets land.
As tides rise and fall, water rushes in and out of the entrances to bays and fjords. When large tides meet narrow inlets, like in the fjords of Southeast Alaska, this creates tidal currents: ocean rivers driven by the moon, flowing in both directions every day and predictable years in advance.

Sitkana's technology is designed as a modular system. Individual generators can work together, allowing power production to grow with the needs of a customer.

Sitkana began in Alaska with a simple idea: build marine energy systems around the realities of working on the water. Inspired by fishing gear and the natural forms of seashells, early prototypes evolved year by year into the technology we have today.

Move coastal power beyond diesel.
Many coastal communities and remote operations still depend on diesel for electricity. Sitkana's mission is to turn the tidal currents already moving past these places into a local source of predictable power.
From the water to engineering, and back again.
I started my career as a commercial fishing deckhand in Southeast Alaska while studying marine biology. A summer on the water led me to mechanical engineering and an interest in generating electricity from ocean currents.
To understand renewable energy operations, I joined NextEra Energy, where I optimized daily maintenance schedules for one of the world's largest renewable energy fleets. My six-person team identified $21 million in savings in our first year.
That experience brought me back to Alaska, where I founded Sitkana to build marine energy systems around how they're actually deployed, operated, and maintained. Outside of Sitkana, I am a large format film photographer. I am usually in the forest with my wife Julia and daughter Maya, or home with our two cats.
